VoiceThread vs. Wimba Voice Board

August 24, 2010

Finding engaging ways to cultivate and encourage student interaction in a distributed (or virtual) environment is a challenge. One of the most well-founded criticisms of distance delivery of training and education is that it is impersonal and one-dimensional. While this can be true due to poor instructional design and delivery, it does not have to be a hopeless situation. In TECH 3030 the goal is to expose students to a variety of different methodologies and delivery vehicles (as many free resources as possible) so they can present their employers with options they might not have previously been aware of.

Wimba Voice Board is a component of the upgrade for BlackBoard 6 and is clearly a paid, institutional resource. VoiceThread offers a free trial for up to 20 students (problematic for my 25+) and may be a better solution than Wimba, if one is to judge the clunkiness of BlackBoard’s track record. We’ll test this one on our own and decide.
